The Owl’s Message
There’s a language to winter that requires patience to hear. On March 17, a thin snowfall swept across the oak savanna, leaving secrets written on its white surface. Under one spreading oak, I noticed a story waiting to be read—the broad, arched impressions of wings and the single stamp of a leg where a barred owl struck.
Just beyond lay the traces of a squirrel’s final run. I hadn’t seen it happen, but the snow told me everything. The depth of the owl’s wing marks revealed the speed and precision of its flight—the pure mastery of instinct meeting opportunity. The squirrel’s tiny prints faded into that space where its movement ended and another life continued.
These are hard stories, yet they belong to the rhythm of this sanctuary. Even amid loss, the snow’s quiet beauty created a fragile stillness that felt sacred. Across the pond, flakes draped the land in shapes that looked carved by wind and grace itself—nature’s art imitating eternity.
